AGNEW PLACE AREA A

Agnew A is an area at the apex of Erie and Union Avenues, continuing back across Agnew Place to include the vacant lot formerly owned by the Borough for the DPW.  The developer’s intention was to eliminate Agnew Place and erect a 6-story building with 145 apartments, including a compliment of Affordable Housing units, with retail at street level.  They later asked that this be increased to 8 stories and 180 units, which was defeated after the outcry from the public and support for PRNJ’s petition.

Of immediate concern is the possible use of Eminent Domain, as the developer does not own all of the properties included in the zone.  These properties would need to be purchased in order for the project to go forward.  Many current owners are unwilling to sell; should this continue the developer would need to either request the Mayor and Council utilize eminent domain to strip the owners of their properties at a reduced price or reformulate their plan to exclude those properties.
